Caerdydd am gyflwyno sylfaen y set hon drwy ymchwilio ar darddiadau dwy
alaw a godwyd o
sesiynau. Ychwanegwyd y gân Da yw
Swllt i gwblhau'r set. Cân foesol sobri wedi'i seilio ar
hen alargan lleddf yw hon sy'n dechrau gyda
swllt, gan wario dwy geiniog ym mhob pennill nes i'r holl arian fynd,
gyda dim ar ôl i fynd adref i Gwen. Mae'n dychwelyd ar ffurf jig fel y
trydydd dôn yn y set. I'r wrthwyneb. cyfansoddwyd alaw Hen Wlad fy Nhadau
gyntaf gan y telynor James James fel jig ond yna arafodd hi i amser 3/4
pan ysgrifennodd ei dad Evan y geiriau i'r alaw boblogaidd fel y gallai
eraill ymuno fod yn rhan ohonno. Arddengys y llawysgrif wreiddiol yn ei
ffurf fel jig yn Llygfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru. Mae'r set yn dechrau gyda Pum Chwecheiniog sydd yn walts hyfryd o gasgliad Nicholas Bennett Alawon Fy Ngwlad a gyhoeddwyd yn 1898, ffynhonnell llawer o'r alawon sydd ar y wefan hon; mae'r set wedyn yn troi i fersiwn offerynnol jig o Da yw Swllt. Mae'r dôn olaf, Tri Chant o Bunnau, wedi'i haddasu o alaw o gasliad Edward Jones (1752-1824), Bardd y Brenin, telynor, hanesydd a chasglwr rhagorol a benodwyd gan Dywysog Cymru. Mae copi o'i gyhoeddiad enwog Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards ar gael yn rhad ac am ddim ar ffurf ddigidol ar wefan Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru. |

to Steve Jeans of the Cardiff Session for presenting the basis of this
set through researching two tunes
from workshops and sessions.
Added to complete the set is the song Da
yw Swllt (a shilling is good),
a Welsh moralistic dirge, which spends twopence per verse until all the
money is gone so there's
none left to take home to Gwen. It returns in the set as a jig, the
reverse of the way the melody of Hen Wlad fy Nhadau
which was first composed by
harpist James James as a jig but then slowed to 3/4 time when his
bardic father Evan wrote the words to the popular melody so that others
could join in. The original jig manuscript is on display in the
National Library of Wales. Pum Chwecheiniog (Five Sixpences) is a lovely waltz from Nicholas Bennett's 1898 Alawon Fy Ngwlad collection of harp tunes, the source of many of the tunes on this website; the set which then goes into a jig version of Da yw Swllt. The third tune, Tri Chant o Bunnau (Three hundred pounds) is adapted from one noted by Edward Jones (1752-1824), Bardd y Brenin (the King's Bard), harpist to the Prince of Wales, historian and collector. A copy of his revered Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards is freely available in digitised form on the website of the National Library of Wales. |
